Early Math Program Coordinator (Contract, Temporary)
Chicago Children’s Museum (CCM) will partner with Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago International Charter Schools to implement Playing with Numbers, a comprehensive professional development program for educators of children in kindergarten and first grade, designed to address the need for quality math education. Over the course of the six-month project, this early math program will serve 20 classrooms, 20 educators and up to 700 students.
General Job Function
The Program Coordinator is responsible for developing and facilitating professional development programs for participating kindergarten and first grade educators, providing in-classroom support, and creating informal learning activities for kindergarten and first grade students and model lessons for educators. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for building strong, meaningful relationships between program and school partners (administrators, educators, etc.), Chicago International Charter Schools (CICS) and CCM. The Program Coordinator will ensure that educators actively participate in the program, successfully integrate CCM’s resource with existing curricula, and effectively apply age-appropriate and engaging math pedagogy.
Principal Responsibilities
· Fully responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of Playing with Numbers professional development program partnership to support educators and students of CICS teaching teams: ·
· Acts as a content expert on elementary mathematics and is intimately familiar with National Core Standards and Illinois Teaching and Learning Standards·
· Develops and implements a CCM professional development program that strengthens kindergarten and first grade teachers’ ability to deepen their understanding of math concepts and supports age-appropriate math learning and activities in their classrooms·
· Creates model lessons that augment CCM-aligned, CICS-adopted curricula through focused field trip activities and integrated resources and materials·
· Supports participating teachers through classroom observation, team collaboration, and in-classroom support·
· Oversees, facilitates, and manages program evaluation activities and information·
· Reviews and provides feedback on related CCM curriculum for professional development and student programs·
· Contributes to CCM’s overall Student and Educator Programming (SEP) efforts by developing, implementing and evaluating partnership program and workshops·
· Participates in SEP project and department meetings and maintains clear, consistent communication with partners and staff·
· Maintains program records and budgets for reporting purposes
Position Qualifications·
· Proven success in developing and facilitating educator professional development· Experience in project and program management·
· Experience working in urban school settings with diverse populations·
· Experience in differentiating instruction in a classroom or informal setting;·
· Experience in integrating math education in early elementary curricula·
· Strong ability to apply creativity and flexibility in learning situations; demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making and judgment·
· Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet deadlines, and handle multiple priorities and projects
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external colleagues· Outstanding and fluent writing skills·
· Proficient in Microsoft Office applications·
· Ability and willingness to work some nights and weekends required·
· Full compliance with mandatory background check·
· Complete access to a fully insured, licensed vehicle.
· Bilingual preferred
Minimum education requirement:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education, elementary, early childhood, or related field required; Mathematics endorsement or Master’s Degree preferred.·
· 3-5 years of experience leading or facilitating groups of adults required; at least 2 years of experience working with children in formal and/or informal learning environments; informal learning experience preferred
· Teaching certification in early elementary grades required
Physical Requirements of the Position:
· Must be able to lift program supplies, up to 50 lbs.
Hours: This is a part-time, grant-funded position. This is a temporary position lasting 10-months with possibility for renewal.
