“On May 27th, Piccolo will be hosting its annual Kids at Hope Family Fun Day.


Kids at Hope is An innovative concept which states and demonstrates that all children are capable of success, NO EXCEPTIONS! Kids at Hope is not another program; it is first and foremost a belief system, supported by a cultural strategy and then enhanced by programs. During Kids at Hope Week, students and staff participate in activities that enforce and reinforce the belief that ”All children are capable of success,” and provides an opportunity for the entire school community to engage in both academic oriented and community based projects that foster academic and socio-emotional learning and fosters a connection to their families and to the community.



I would love for community organizations to come out and share their information with the community. A lot of our parents don’t know what’s out there for them. They can set up tables and hand out information and connect with people. This will be a carnival-like event. The newspapers are scheduled to be out and I have invited Alderman Mitts. I will also be reaching out to the Mayor and the new CPS board president. Let me know if you are interested in participating.”

16th ANNUAL WALK FOR PEACE


Alliance of Local Service Organizations (ALSO), with The Neighborhood Chapel will host their 16th Annual walk for peace.

How To Get Food Help






How To Get Food Help is a low literacy, clear language brochure targeted at consumers who may be new to navigating social services and assistance applications.


The brochure clearly explains all FNS programs that consumers apply to directly, and it gives them basic information to identify which programs might be right for them. It also gives basic next steps to get them started in the application process, as well as links and toll-free numbers for more information. How To Get Food Help will be a useful tool to add to your outreach strategy.

How To Get Food Help is organized and color coded by groups of people, such as seniors (60+), school-age children, and pregnant and nursing women. This allows consumers to self-identify which programs they may be eligible for. The brochure also covers common questions about whether or not consumers may receive benefits from multiple FNS programs or if they automatically qualify for a program if they already receive benefits from another program.


Here are some tips on how to use How To Get Food Help in your outreach activities:


























· Hand out copies at any outreach or information events you have.



· Include copies in bags of food that are distributed.



· Talk through the brochure and help clients identify which group they best fit in.



· Use the brochure as a template to present FNS programs in your outreach presentations.



· Use the brochures (links below) and PPT presentation (attached) to train your employees and outreach volunteers about FNS programs.



· Use the brochure to discuss outreach partnership and funding opportunities with your supporters.

LOOKING FOR AN INTERN?


I have some great news from our career development center (CDC). There is an opportunity for non-profit organizations and businesses throughout Chicago to host interns. This opportunity for interns is a program by DFSS for clients enrolled in WIA, ages 16-21, to gain meaningful work experience. The interns are available for the next 6-8 weeks until June 30, 2011.

Your agency can benefit from these interns by having them do various work such as janitorial, marketing, working with afterschool programs, community outreach, clerical , administrative, and train them for other possible needs at your agency.

2011 CSBG SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION


The Department of Family and Support Services has released the 2011 CSBG Scholarship Application.



Applications are due June 8th. Anyone going to school full-time (degree, certificate, trade school) by September 15, 2011, has primary residence in Chicago, and meets income guidelines is eligible to apply.

YOUTH READY CHICAGO RFP FOR SUMMER


The Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) is excited to announce the release of their Request for Proposals (RFP) for Youth Ready Chicago program hubs, a 2011 youth, wage- subsidized summer jobs program for youth 16 – 24.


Mayor Richard M. Daley has committed $1.4 million in parking meter infrastructure funds to support a subsidized summer jobs program by increasing the number of city-supported employment opportunities for Chicago youth.



Through this RFP, the program anticipates engaging approximately 600 Chicago youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in paid work experiences and career readiness skills. Programs can operate during a 6-10 week period between June 1 and December 31.



DFSS is seeking proposals from organizations with the qualifications and experience to rapidly implement the program during the summer of 2011. Respondents to the RFP should be capable of providing the following services: youth worker recruitment, program eligibility for youth participants, job/worksite development, job matching, youth training, adult supervision, data collection, payroll system administration (including the fiscal capacity to generate and distribute checks to all youth associated with the hub), worksite monitoring and overall program administration.


DFSS anticipates funding six to ten contracts for worksite hubs. Contract sizes are estimated to range between $210,000 - $400,000.

YOUTH READY CHICAGO SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES


There is still time to apply for the 2011 Youth Ready Chicago summer opportunities. Young people between the ages of 14-21, are able to apply for internships, apprenticeships and jobs within Chicago’s public and private business sectors. Programs include Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, After School Matters, Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services.

2011 TYLENOL FUTURE CARE SCHOLARSHIPS

About LLS:


There are approximately 1 million people in the United States living with, or in remission from, blood cancer, which is the most common cancer diagnosis in children. The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. We are looking for a bilingual/bicultural Manager, Community Outreach to educate patients and health care professionals about LLS programs and services.



Duties and Responsibilities:


Serve as liaison with community/regional oncology health professionals and treatment centers


Establish, coordinate and maintain strong relationships with hematologists/oncologists, oncology nurses and social workers in the major treatment centers throughout the Chapter's territory


Build relationships with local chapters of professional oncology associations


Build partnerships with community and health organizations and agencies serving leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma patients – including underserved populations (Latino, African American, elderly, downstate, etc.)


Develop and present informational sessions to hospital staff, community agencies, and professional organizations concerning LLS programs and information


Schedule and facilitate various LLS patient/professional education programs


Provide educational programs in Spanish for the Latino community


Recruit and train volunteers to carry out health care professional outreach activities


Responsible for the distribution of LLS information and promotional packets to oncology health professionals, community agencies, and professional oncology associations


Provide public services announcements, news articles, and advertisements for television, radio, and print media in coordination with Marketing & Communications (both local and Home Office), Patient Services and Senior Director, Mission Support


Handle a portion of incoming patient calls and First Connection Matches


Maintain and update Patient Services databases


Identify new resources for patient referrals


Maintain educational materials for distribution among patients, health care providers and the community


Encourage and model standard for cross-promotion amongst campaigns


Assist with various chapter events (i.e. Light the Night Walk)


Maintain a working knowledge of the LLS mission and educate others on our goals


Perform other duties as assigned


Position Requirements:


Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Nursing, or other health-related discipline with a concentration in community health or community organization; Master's Degree preferred


Minimum of 3-4 years experience in a nonprofit or healthcare setting


Bilingual/bicultural (English and Spanish)


Excellent oral and written communication skills


Experienced in presentations to multiple audiences


Capable of balancing multiple priorities effectively and meeting deadlines


Successful track record of developing strong working relationships with volunteers, health care facilities, and community organizations
